The US House of Representatives has passed a bill that would set strict approval guidelines for self-driving cars. (See http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-selfdriving-idUSKBN1962YV). The legislation was requested by the developers of self-driving cars so they can work with one national guideline instead of multiple guidelines adopted by the States. It is not clear if this legislation will ever become law as setting driving rules has long been the responsibility of the States and rules are only imposed by the Federal government under special circumstances. However, if nothing else the article is a good indication of the combined influence over legislation when traditional auto-oriented industry teams up with the new political muscle of high tech.
